Africa’s Heartbeat: Morocco Launches AFCON 2025 with Spectacular 2-0 Win and Star-Studded Show

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations officially burst into life yesterday in Rabat, and even without the Black Stars in the mix, the scale of the production was impossible to ignore. Morocco has set a bar that feels more like a World Cup than a continental tournament.

The Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium was a sea of 60,000 fans yesterday as Morocco officially launched AFCON 2025 with a ceremony that blended cutting-edge tech with deep African heritage. Despite heavy rain, the atmosphere was electric, headlined by a powerhouse musical lineup featuring Davido, French Montana, and RedOne. The official anthem was unveiled with a massive performance by Beninese icon Angélique Kidjo alongside Moroccan stars L’Artiste and Jaylann, while legendary band Nass El Ghiwane brought the stadium to its feet with a cultural tribute that echoed through the streets of Rabat.

The high-profile guest list—including FIFA’s Gianni Infantino and CAF’s Patrice Motsepe—watched as Morocco’s Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan performed the ceremonial kickoff. On the pitch, the Atlas Lions lived up to the hype, securing a 2-0 victory over a gritty Comoros side. Brahim Diaz finally broke the deadlock in the 55th minute, but the night’s sporting highlight was a spectacular bicycle kick from Ayoub El Kaabi in the 74th minute that sent the home crowd into a frenzy. It was a perfect start for the hosts, though the mood was slightly dampened by an early injury to captain Romain Saïss, who left the field in tears. The tournament is officially underway, and Morocco has sent a clear message: they are here to win it all.
