| China Pledges $30M to Modernize Ghana’s National Theatre |
In a landmark move for the Ghanaian creative arts sector, the People's Republic of China has committed $30 million (approximately ¥200 million) toward the comprehensive renovation of the National Theatre in Accra.
This funding, which was finalized during President John Dramani Mahama’s recent high-level bilateral talks with President Xi Jinping in Beijing, is part of a broader grant package aimed at "Resetting Ghana’s" infrastructure.
The Scope of Transformation
Following a first-hand assessment by a Chinese technical delegation in December 2025, the renovation has been prioritized to move the 33-year-old edifice into the modern era. The project isn't just a "face-lift"; it is a technical overhaul designed to meet world-class production standards. Key focus areas include:
- Modernizing Stage Technology: Upgrading sound, lighting, and stage mechanics to host larger, more complex international productions.
- Safety & Security: Installation of advanced firefighting equipment, high-definition CCTV systems, and reinforced fencing.
- Audience Comfort: A complete overhaul of the air-conditioning systems and seating in the main and secondary halls.
- Infrastructure Support: Refurbishment of storage spaces and a general aesthetic facelift of the entire compound.
A Legacy Restored
The National Theatre, which was originally gifted to Ghana by China in 1992, has long been the "heartbeat" of the performing arts. However, Executive Director Henry Herbert Malm noted that aging infrastructure had begun to hinder optimal performance.
Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, emphasized that this renovation aligns with a new five-year strategic vision for the institution. The goal is to ensure the theatre remains a competitive, functional hub for the National Dance Company, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the National Drama Company.
Work is expected to commence following the finalization of technical assessments, with the 2026 budget already reflecting the government's commitment to seeing this "cultural monument" restored to its former glory.
