Cristiano Ronaldo's Final World Cup Ends in Heartbreak Against Spain

| Cristiano Ronaldo's Final World Cup Ends in Heartbreak Against Spain |
Cristiano Ronaldo has played his last World Cup match. Portugal's 2026 campaign is over. And once again, the one trophy that eluded him his entire career remains just out of reach.
Spain eliminated Portugal 1-0 in a tense round of 16 clash in Arlington, Texas, with substitute Mikel Merino scoring a dramatic 91st-minute winner. It brought the curtain down not just on Portugal's tournament, but on Ronaldo's international World Cup career altogether — a run spanning six tournaments and 23 years that will now close without ever lifting the trophy he wanted most.
How the Match Unfolded
The game played out as a tight, cagey affair, with Spain controlling more of the ball while Portugal leaned on quick transitions. Spain finished with the better underlying numbers — 1.77 expected goals across 15 shots to Portugal's modest 0.60 from 10 attempts — but for long stretches it looked destined for extra time.
Ronaldo had his moments. He saw an early effort palmed away by goalkeeper Unai Simón, who denied him again before halftime, while Nuno Mendes' deflected strike cannoned off the crossbar. But the decisive blow came late: after coming on as a substitute, Merino won a foul in a dangerous area, then ghosted in behind Portugal's defense to finish off a pass from fellow sub Ferran Torres in the 91st minute. It was enough to send Spain through to the quarterfinals, where they'll face the winner of USA and Belgium.
For Ronaldo individually, it was a quiet farewell by his standards — just 19 total touches across the full 90 minutes, the fewest he's ever recorded in the first half of a World Cup match.
"This Will Be My Last World Cup"
Ronaldo had been unusually direct in the days leading up to the match, confirming publicly for the first time that this tournament would be his last, regardless of the outcome. He'll turn 45 by the time the next World Cup arrives in 2030 — a tournament that, notably, Portugal is set to co-host alongside Spain and Morocco.
Afterward, an emotional Ronaldo wiped away tears as he applauded fans inside Dallas Stadium. He struck a tone of pride rather than regret, saying he was leaving the tournament with a clear conscience after giving everything he had to the sport. He was careful, though, not to confirm this was his final appearance for Portugal altogether, saying he didn't want to make any hasty personal decisions in the emotional aftermath of elimination.
Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez, who also announced he is stepping down after the tournament, offered warm praise for his captain — describing Ronaldo as an example on and off the pitch and crediting him with erasing the doubts that once surrounded his place in the squad.
A Career of World Cup Near-Misses
Ronaldo leaves the World Cup stage as the tournament's all-time leading scorer among active players in this cycle, and the only man ever to score in six different editions. He finishes with 27 career World Cup appearances — second only to Lionel Messi's 30 — and 11 goals, tied for ninth on the all-time list. He scored three goals at this tournament alone: a brace against Uzbekistan and a penalty against Croatia in the round of 32.
But the deepest Ronaldo ever advanced was the semifinals, all the way back in his World Cup debut in 2006. Since then, it's been a string of painful exits: knocked out by Spain in the round of 16 in 2010, group-stage elimination in 2014, another round of 16 exit to Uruguay in 2018, a quarterfinal loss to Morocco in 2022, and now this — Spain again, in the round of 16, in what he's confirmed is the end.
What's Next
With Ronaldo's World Cup chapter closed and Martínez already announcing his departure as head coach, Portugal now faces a genuine rebuild — a new manager, a new look going forward, and the challenge of moving on from the most decorated player in national team history without a plan built entirely around him. Whether Ronaldo has played his last match for Portugal in any competition remains an open question he says he isn't ready to answer yet.
For Spain, the win sets up a quarterfinal date with either the United States or Belgium, as La Furia Roja continue to look like one of the tournament's most complete sides.
