In a significant expansion of his media portfolio, digital creator Darren Watkins, globally known as IShowSpeed, has partnered with Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground to executive produce The Eyes of Ghana, a landmark documentary capturing Africa's mid-century independence movement. The project, produced in collaboration with the two-time Academy Award-winning Breakwater Studios and directed by Ben Proudfoot, marks Watkins' debut into prestige documentary filmmaking. This strategic venture highlights a growing trend of major digital personalities leveraging their immense global reach to fund and elevate high-impact, culturally vital cinematic preservation projects.
🚨| BREAKING: Speed takes a HUGE STEP beyond streaming with his FIRST EVER film as a producer “THE EYES OF GHANA” as its FIRST TRAILER officially drops - The documentary follows Ghanaian cinematographer Chris Hesse as he attempts to SAVE over 1,000 historic films documenting Africa’s fight for INDEPENDENCE in the 1950s and 1960s. https://t.co/bE2H1MeZBg

The documentary focuses on the urgent mission of 94-year-old Ghanaian cinematographer Chris Hesse, who historically served as the personal cameraman to Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah. Facing advancing age and declining health, Hesse is engaged in a critical race against time to restore and preserve more than 1,000 archival film reels that document the foundational moments of African liberation in the 1950s and 1960s. Inspired by his recent travels to the region, Watkins’ involvement bridges modern digital distribution with institutional archiving, providing a massive contemporary platform for Hesse's vital historical record. Distributed for an exclusive engagement, The Eyes of Ghana is scheduled for a special, one-night-only theatrical release across major North American chains—including AMC, Regal, and Cinemark—on Wednesday, October 28, 2026
